bat biodiversity partnership - Memorandum of Understanding

The Biodiversity Partnership is governed by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between all the Partners.

The MOU represents the agreement between the partners for a third term running from January 2011 to December 2015, building on the experience of the previous 10 years.

The MoU sets out the Purpose, Mission and Scope of the Partnership as follows:

  • The Partnership's Purpose is to maintain and enhance biodiversity and ecosystem services (BES) in agricultural landscapes and the wider ecosystems on which they depend.
  • The Partnership’s Mission is to act as a catalyst, bringing together the knowledge, skills and resources of the partners to leverage positive change in understanding and behaviour amongst stakeholders.
  • The MoU describes the Scope of our work and explains how the programme is delivered through two streams of work, each with a framework of key measures and indicators, and a monitoring and evaluation protocol that enable effective tracking, learning and communications. For more about the Operational and Aligned Programmes see Project Design and Management.

The MoU explains the Nature of the Partnership:

  • All aspects of the Partnership will be transparent. All agreements and terms of reference will be available on request. The existence of the Partnership does not imply that any partner endorses the activities of any other partner. The Partnership is not an endorsement by any of the NGO partners of BAT’s products, activities or business.
  • The Partnership is not a legal entity in its own right, and no single partner has the right to make commitments on behalf of any other partner.

The MoU outlines the Governance of the Partnership, including the roles of Project Teams, the Programme Management Team, The Board, and the Assurance process. A handbook sets out full details of Partnership Governance.
